THE EIGHTH ANNUAL SOUTHEASTERN BRAIN
TUMOR FOUNDATION
RACE FOR RESEARCH WAS HELD SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2007 AT
ATLANTIC STATION, 171 SEVENTEENTH STREET, NW, ATLANTA, GA
______________
The 2007 race was the most successful Race for Research ever with an estimated 1200 to 1300 participants! SBTF President Jim Parsons announced that over $300,000 was raised for brain tumor research. He pointed out that because SBTF is an all-volunteer organization, the administrative and general costs are less than 3% of the annual expenses with 97% going to brain tumor research and support services. Parsons thanked participants, contributors, sponsors and all who helped to make the results possible.
TV and radio personalities Chris Holcomb, Tom Sullivan, Tiffany Cochran, and Clarence
Reynolds were on site for the race at Atlantic Station Saturday morning with periodic live coverage between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m.
Top individual fundraisers were John Herman ($11,343), Jim Wilk ($10,732), Kelly Turner ($9,220), Dick Comanzo ($3,895), and Courtney Haney ($3,595).
Top teams were Steps for Epp ($29,260), JJS ($20,260), Fight for Karen Herman/Mommy Power (tie for third - both right at $16,000), Hootenanny for Danny ($14,002), and Team Comanzo-Hodges/Team Emory (tie for fifth - both right at $10,000).
In an email to the team captains, Team Coordinator and SBTF Vice-president Bill Massih wrote "This year's success can be measured in so many ways....from our growing numbers of Survivors....to our growing dollars to fund that all important research, and rid ourselves of this awful disease! Although all our streams of revenue for this Race have grown, and are most important, future success will be heavily influenced by the growth of our current Teams, and the additon of new ones. If we can sustain this year's pace, we will approach, or surpass, the half
million dollar mark next year....this is so exciting, and with your continued help, we know we can do it!"
The fastest runner overall was Michael Green with 14:57.0. Congratulations, Michael, for finishing first for three consecutive years! Patrice Combs was top female runner with a time of 19:39.0. Our thanks and congratulations go to Patrice, Michael, and all who participated to support brain tumor research. Click here for an Excel file listing other times.
One of the 2007 Race for Research sponsors, 11Alive, has set up a special brain tumor page at http://www.11alive.com/news/health/article_health.aspx?storyid=100235 where you can read stories about individuals who have been affected by brain tumors and also post your story.
The Wall of Honor - a way of honoring brain tumor survivors and remembering those who have gone on - was a touching part of the Race for Research event. Participants brought memoirs for display including photographs and stories about their experience with brain tumor.

The Wall of Honor was located in the "Central Park" area of Atlantic Station.
The purpose of the race is to raise much-needed funds for brain tumor research and for support for patients and their families who have been affected by brain tumors. In 2006,
SBTF awarded a total of $210,000 for three innovative brain tumor
research projects at leading institutions in the Southeast. The 2007 SBTF Research Grants are expected to be awarded in November.
