Thoughts from our Recipients

"Receiving this scholarship will help to ease some of the burden of loans that I will be taking on and positively impact my future. It will allow me to spend less time worrying about repayment, and more time focusing on my studies so I can make a difference in people's lives the way the SBTF has made a difference in mine."

~Bella V, 2021 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of the Voices of Hope Scholarship from the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation. My dad battled a brain tumor my entire life and lost his battle when I was nine years old. Receiving this scholarship will help ease some of the financial burden as I pursue my goal of becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I feel my dad’s battle, and the disabilities caused by his brain tumor, helped shape who I am today and have led me on a path of helping others. Thank you for helping me reach this goal.”

~Jason M, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"Receiving The Jeff Epperson Memorial Scholarship means everything to me! I was so inspired by Jeff’s story and his fight with his brain tumor. When I found out about my brain tumor, I had just finished my first year of nursing school. After spending time in the hospital after my craniotomy to have my tumor removed, I was inspired by the care I received from all of my nurses, and it has made love the field of nursing even more. This scholarship will help me finish my last year of nursing school, so that I can become a registered nurse and provide compassionate care to other people, like all of my nurses provided for me."

~Hayley M, 2023 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"I am honored to be a recipient of the Karen Herman Voices of Hope Academic Scholarship as I begin a new chapter of my life. With the help of this generous scholarship, I plan to study neuroscience at Scripps College and spread hope for other survivors like myself. Thank you to SBTF for helping me take one step toward my future academic endeavors that I hope can one day aid survivors and families affected by brain cancer."

~Nitya C, 2023 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"Receiving this scholarship for the second year in a row is a blessing to me as I enter my last year of nursing school. I am grateful for this scholarship and the financial help as I work to pursue my dreams and become a nurse."

~Jordan H, 2021 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"The SBTF Voices of Hope Academic Scholarship will help reduce the financial burden of pursuing graduate studies for a Master of Architecture degree, thus making it more financially feasible to start my own architecture firm after I graduate. Thank you SBTF for helping students turn a life-altering experience into something positive!"

"Receiving this scholarship is so special to me, but even more special for the younger me who dreamed of studying theater in college. The biggest supporters of these dreams have always been my parents. My education has always been their number one priority. Growing up I always admired how I had two incredibly intelligent parents that wanted my future to not only be filled with success, but also an abundance of happiness. Participating in the SBTF’s race for research is such a fond memory and I know my dad would be so proud that I am able to begin this next chapter of my life and continue my education."

"The Will Prigden Voices of Hope scholarship award means the world to me! From the first time I ever picked up a guitar, my Father was always there to support my dream. He made sure I was where I needed to be for practice, lessons, and everything else. He came to every single show to make sure he could support me however he could. I want to do the same thing for other musicians with my audio degree. My goal is to help small/local artists get their music written, recorded, and released to follow their dreams. This award will help me do just that. Thank you so much for selecting me for this award."

~ Josh G, 2021 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“The Karen Herman Legacy Scholarship has made medical school significantly easier by allowing me to focus on becoming a better doctor for my patients, rather than worrying about the financial burden of tuition. I am deeply grateful to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation (SBTF) for their tireless work in supporting those with a family history of brain tumors. Thanks to their efforts, I am inspired to one day provide the same compassionate care for families like my own.”

~Emma C, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"I am so grateful for being awarded the Craig “Ironhead” Heyward Voices of Hope Academic Scholarship.
Receiving this scholarship will help pay for college and ultimately help me make a difference in the world around me. I plan to use my college education to help the environment, which makes this scholarship incredibly important, as it will help fund that education. After I developed a brain tumor, most of my college funds went into paying off medical bills, many of which have yet to be completely paid off. For the last few years, my family and I have worried about how we would be able to pay for college and the loans that would undoubtedly come with it. We are incredibly grateful for this scholarship and those who recognize the struggle of children who go through hardship and continue to push towards an education and a bright future. Thank you to SBTF and the Cameron Heyward Foundation for helping to give me the means to achieve my educational goals."

~Bryn M, 2022 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“I am incredibly grateful to SBTF for this scholarship opportunity and allowing me to continue the legacy of Karen Herman. I am currently double majoring in cell and molecular biology and psychology. I plan to honor my grandfather’s memory and make him proud by becoming a physician and showing my patients every kindness. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the creation of this scholarship and for your generosity.“

~Cloey B, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“This award means a great deal to me as it will help me achieve my goal of obtaining a college degree in a career that I choose. I am thankful and proud to receive this award, which confirms to me that my hard work and determination have paid off. Also, it proves that after cancer, you can still achieve the goals that you set for yourself. “

~Brannon N, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"Receiving the Ironhead Heyward Voices of Hope scholarship from the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation is such an honor. Thank you so much for your efforts and the scholarship!!!"

~Christopher H, 2022 VOH Scholarship Recipient

My life was undoubtedly changed for the worse by my diagnosis, and this award gives me assistance in setting up my future to be as fruitful as possible!"

“I am truly blessed and honored to receive the Craig "Ironhead" Heyward Voices of Hope Scholarship. Having been diagnosed with a brain tumor, I faced many difficulties, not just physically but mentally/emotionally as well. Reaching out and surrounding yourself with supports will help with the lasting impact of having a brain tumor. Because of SBTF, this scholarship will help alleviate some of the financial burden in paying for school. That way I can focus on obtaining my degree in Human Biology/Pre-Medicine at Ohio University and begin my journey to medical school. Thank you SBTF and the Cameron Heyward Foundation for this scholarship and getting me one step closer to my dream!”

~Jordyne N, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“After entering remission, I felt like my brain tumor journey had become hidden. This award from the SBTF makes me feel seen. The recognition validates my decision to pursue a higher education at Purdue University despite its hardships financially, physically, and mentally. It’s extra special that the award I received was in memory of a previous Purdue student (Boiler Up!). I feel empowered to finish my undergraduate degree in engineering and use it to show the world just how much I am capable of. Thank you SBTF for giving me more hope for my future!"

~Preslyn H, 2023 VOH Scholarship Recipient

"I want to first thank the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation for making this scholarship possible. Thank you for all that you do within the brain tumor community. Receiving this scholarship is truly a full circle moment for me; my family and I attended the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation Walk/Run on Saturday, July 23, 2011, in honor of my late brother Tyler C. Williams. Tyler's Team name was: We Have A Story To Tell. Tyler was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma on April 22, 2009. He lived 8.5 years past his three-month prognosis transitioning to heaven on December 28, 2017. I always wanted to be a pediatrician, but it was not until Tyler passed away that I knew what specialty I would pursue. I am a Forensic Science and Biology Double Major with a Chemistry Minor and will be graduating in the Fall of 2023. My main goal is to prolong the healthy life of children with cancer. Having siblings made me who I am today. We deserve a chance to grow up together; we deserve each other. This award allows me to continue to work towards becoming a Pediatric Neuro-Oncologist as it lifts a tremendous financial burden. As Tyler would say, please remember to "Treat yo'self" Thank you all again for this amazing opportunity."

~Taylor W, 2023 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“I am so honored to receive this scholarship and I am grateful to have so many opportunities to turn a horrible diagnosis into something positive. I like to use my experiences to help and connect with kids and families in similar circumstances and receiving this scholarship helps me continue to serve as a positive role model to other kids who have a parent with a brain tumor. I truly believe that I am on the path that I am supposed to be on.”

~Katherine D, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“This award means a lot to me because it shows that I am a very determined individual who despite the struggles cancer has created, continues to do her very best work. I am proud to show others that I will continue to persevere regardless of having to work twice as hard to get there.”

~Anna G, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“From a young age, I wanted to be a teacher who changed lives in the way my teachers changed mine. Receiving the Faulkenberry Family Scholarship allows me to continue my education in my Master's program to be a more effective teacher who reminds students that our challenges do not have to hinder us from greatness.”

~Christian J, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“I'm so thankful that even though dealing with my mom's brain tumor, and everything that has come with it, has been awful, something good could come out of the situation. Thank you so much for your generosity, and know that this has blessed my family.”

~Heath H, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“Thank you so much for the generous award. It means living with a brain tumor and epilepsy will not have to disrupt my education. It means that my mom can take a rest after her upcoming breast cancer surgery instead of trying to work as she usually would. It also will mean I can focus on school and sharing my gift of singing at church and elsewhere, rather than trying to juggle a job and school, leaving little room for my musical passion. I am grateful beyond words.”

~Virginia B, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

“This scholarship award will help my family pay for my college education at the University of California - Los Angeles where I will be studying Neuroscience. I aspire to go on to medical school after my undergraduate studies with the big goal in mind of working to become a Neuro-oncologist like my very own Neuro-oncologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Tom Davidson.“

~Parker S, 2024 VOH Scholarship Recipient

The Will Pridgen VOH Scholarship

Will Pridgen loved life and people, and the mantra “Live Life to the Willest” was penned by his friends and family to describe the example he set for us.  Will, who lost his battle with brain cancer at the tender age of 34, was an amazing graphic artist and a wonderful soul. His personality was larger than life and his impact on others was tremendous.

In keeping with his passion for helping others, the “Will Pridgen Voices of Hope (VOH)  Scholarship” was created. It is the HOPE of Will’s Family and the SBTF to carry on the scholarship in his honor. The award is meant to assist students, whose lives have been affected by either their own brain tumor diagnosis, or that of a close family member; to obtain a post-secondary education at an accredited College, University, or Technical school in the field of Fine Arts.

The Karen Herman Legacy Scholarship

The Karen Herman Legacy Scholarship is an annual scholarship provided to two individuals who have been personally affected by a brain tumor and as a result, have shown inspired determination and resolve to accomplish more in life.  Recipients of the Karen Herman Legacy Scholarship are encouraged to use these funds for their educational advancement, understanding that this support comes from the larger community of those affected by brain tumors.  As someone who courageously faced brain cancer herself, Karen’s parting wish to her family was to contribute in some meaningful way to those also affected by this awful disease.  Even amid sickness, there is community and life.  We thank the recipients of this year's scholarship for their sustained mindfulness and consideration of the larger community they are counted among and supported by.

Donna L. Chandler Voices of Hope Scholarship

The Donna L. Chandler Scholarship is a tribute to a stoic, courageous, and kind individual, who was a young mother of three when her seizures began. Despite countless health challenges and obstacles encountered over the decades, she maintained a never give up attitude, and endeavored to help others whenever possible.  This academic scholarship is meant to “help others” who’ve been impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis and are seeking a post-secondary education.
