SUMMARY:Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation's Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate another year of the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation with us! The SBTF was founded in 1995 by a family whose son was facing a brain tumor diagnosis. It has grown into a Foundation that has funded almost $3 million dollars in research\, awarded scholarships\, and supported patients and their families. Our impact together can be seen in the research strides as well as in the improvement of the lives of brain tumor and brain cancer patients and their families. Each year the generosity of our loyal supporters is translated into research grants\, educational scholarships\, support group programs and patient services. The Foundation is proudly served by an all-volunteer Board of Directors who have each been impacted by a brain tumor or brain cancer. \nPlease consider making a birthday gift to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation today and celebrate with us! \nSometimes the donations received during our Birthday Celebration are earmarked for a specific goal: \n\nSummer Medical Student Fellowship\npost-secondary scholarships\npatient programs including grocery delivery\, transportation assistance and other services\nor as general donations to the Foundation\n\nThis year\, we are gifting to our patient community. Our Amazon Wish List contains items useful to patients currently undergoing treatment such as lip balm\, blankets\, puzzle books\, hard candy\, gloves\, lotion and more. Items are shipped directly to our staff from Amazon who then create Care Bags for the patients at local treatment centers. \nDonate here on this site\, on Facebook or on Instagram. If you donate on this site you can choose how to direct your gift: research\, scholarships\, or to lighten the load for patients. Don’t forget to check to see if your employer will match your gift and double the impact of your generosity!

SUMMARY:Aphasia Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Aphasia is caused by damage to the language-dominant side of the brain\, usually the left side\, and may be brought on by stroke\, head injury or a brain tumor. Our online Aphasia Support Group brings together brain tumor patients who are struggling with aphasia. Erica Johns Freestone\, SLP\, from Emory John’s Creek Rehab department facilitates this meeting. \nThe support group meets virtually using the Zoom platform. This allows participants not in the Atlanta area and those who do not feel comfortable in a face-to-face group setting to still have access to the support group. \nThe Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation hosted online aphasia support group meets bi-weekly via Zoom at 12:30 – 1:30 pm ET on Thursdays. Some meetings include a guest speaker on topic relevant to the aphasia and brain tumor community. \nPlease contact us at supportgroups@sbtf.org for the online aphasia support group Zoom invite and details. \nLearn about all the other brain tumor support group opportunities on our Support Group Resource page. \nAphasia is an impairment of language\, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brain-most commonly from a stroke\, particularly in older individuals. But brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma\, from brain tumors\, or from infections. \nAphasia can be so severe as to make communication with the patient almost impossible\, or it can be very mild. It may affect mainly a single aspect of language use\, such as the ability to retrieve the names of objects\, or the ability to put words together into sentences\, or the ability to read. More commonly\, however\, multiple aspects of communication are impaired\, while some channels remain accessible for a limited exchange of information. \n

SUMMARY:Aphasia Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Aphasia is caused by damage to the language-dominant side of the brain\, usually the left side\, and may be brought on by stroke\, head injury or a brain tumor. Our Aphasia Support Group brings together brain tumor patients who are struggling with aphasia. \nDue to pandemic safety concern\, the support group is meeting virtually using the Zoom platform. The online platform is slated to continue even after face-to-face meetings can resume. This will allow participants not in the Atlanta area and those who do not feel comfortable in a group setting to still have access to the support group. \nThe Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation hosted aphasia support group meets bi-weekly via Zoom at 1:30 – 2:30 pm ET on Wednesdays. Some meetings include a guest speaker on topic relevant to the aphasia and brain tumor community. \nPlease contact us at info@sbtf.org for the Zoom invite and details.
