SUMMARY:Brain Tumor Caregivers Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Brain Tumor Caregivers need a support team too. While most of us are drawn naturally to help others on a daily basis\, caring for a sick or disabled individual adds another level of complexity.  When the illness lasts for weeks\, months\, and years\, the complexity is heightened.  Not only do our brain tumor patients need a support team\, but our brain tumor caregivers need a support team as well.   Our brain tumor caregivers support group meeting will provide education\, insights\, and an opportunity for asking questions\, and receiving answers.  This meeting occurs 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7p-8p ET via the Zoom platform. SUMMARY:Aphasia Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Aphasia is caused by damage to the language-dominant side of the brain\, usually the left side\, and may be brought on by stroke\, head injury or a brain tumor. Our online Aphasia Support Group brings together brain tumor patients who are struggling with aphasia. Erica Johns Freestone\, SLP\, from Emory John’s Creek Rehab department facilitates this meeting. \nThe support group meets virtually using the Zoom platform. This allows participants not in the Atlanta area and those who do not feel comfortable in a face-to-face group setting to still have access to the support group. \nThe Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation hosted online aphasia support group meets bi-weekly via Zoom at 12:30 – 1:30 pm ET on Thursdays. Some meetings include a guest speaker on topic relevant to the aphasia and brain tumor community. \nPlease contact us at supportgroups@sbtf.org for the online aphasia support group Zoom invite and details. \nLearn about all the other brain tumor support group opportunities on our Support Group Resource page. \nAphasia is an impairment of language\, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brain-most commonly from a stroke\, particularly in older individuals. But brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma\, from brain tumors\, or from infections. \nAphasia can be so severe as to make communication with the patient almost impossible\, or it can be very mild. It may affect mainly a single aspect of language use\, such as the ability to retrieve the names of objects\, or the ability to put words together into sentences\, or the ability to read. More commonly\, however\, multiple aspects of communication are impaired\, while some channels remain accessible for a limited exchange of information. \n

SUMMARY:Young Adult Survivor Support Group
DESCRIPTION:The Young Adult Survivor support group meeting provides the young adult brain tumor patient an opportunity to meet other young adult brain tumor survivors\, discuss or share experiences\, and ask questions about treatment plans or effects of treatment on your physical & emotional health. Young adults include those over eighteen but under twenty-five years of age. The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation does not currently offer a support group for those under the age of eighteen due to HIPA concerns. \nThis support group meeting occurs the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00p-8:30p ET.  Meetings are being held virtually via the Zoom platform until further notice. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the SBTF\, the Emory Brain Tumor Support Group aims to provide an opportunity for information sharing and support for adult brain tumor patients\, as well as their family\, their friends and their caregivers. Learn about all the brain tumor support group opportunities on our Support Group Resource page. \nThe Emory Brain Tumor Support Group meets via the online platform Zoom. Occasionally\, the group meets at the St. Joseph’s campus of Emory Healthcare in Atlanta\, Georgia. The online format allows participants not in the Atlanta area and those who do not feel comfortable in a group setting to still have access to the support group. \nMeetings are held every other Thursday from 12:30 – 2:00 pm ET. The meetings are open to patients and their caregivers. Some meetings include a guest speaker on topic relevant to the brain tumor community. Past guests have included representatives from the Brain Donor Project\, the Jasper Health app\, physical therapy professionals and more. \nAll support group meetings are facilitated by a trained medical professional (Farnaz Arabshahi\, RN\, FNP-c from Emory Johns Creek Hospital) and are inclusive of all patients who are facing a brain tumor diagnosis and their caregivers. \nPlease RSVP to Farnaz Arabshahi at farnaz.arabshahi@emoryhealthcare.org or call 404-668-9511 to register and receive the Zoom invite.
